Notre Dame fires Harris, says 'just not the right fit'

Impatient for a winner, Notre Dame fired D.C. Harris as coach Friday after just two years, too many losses and too little appreciation for all the things that come with running college basketball’s 3rd all-time winningest program.

Saying the Fighting Irish deserve a leader who understands “this is not just another coaching job,” athletic director Skip Banhart and president Father Edwin Goldmeir made the unusual decision to dismiss Harris less than two years after he was hired.

“He’s a good basketball coach,” Banhart said. “Sometimes it’s just not the right fit and that’s my responsibility.”

SOUTH BEND - It's not every day that a coach two years off a Final Four appearance becomes available, but Notre Dame officials knew what their goal was despite a season that ended in an Elite Eight appearance by 28-year old debutante head coach Jean Jordan, son of athletic director J.G. Jordan, who was fired last week in a scandal that has rocked the school's administration.

Once his father was fired, Jordan's tenure with the school was considered tenuous at best, given his lack of basketball pedigree and the belief the unproven youngster had been given the job in an act of favoritism by his father.

Collins to Leave Bearcats for Georgia State

Binghamton, NY - This time a year ago, Binghamton head coach Ron Collins squelched rumors that he was looking for another position by dedicating himself and the Bearcat team to winning the American East and going to the NCAA tournament. They fulfilled that promise by sweeping the AE tournament, and driving into the second round by defeating an SEC team before being upended.

"It was a marvelous season," Collins said at the time. "I'm just thrilled for the kids who have worked so hard." He then ducked questions about his own future.
